  • Not much to say today other than the Oscar pick du jour, so I’ll cut right to the chase:

    BEST SOUND EFFECTS EDITING

    The Nominees Are:

    • The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

    • Minority Report

    • Road to Perdition

Erin’s Pick: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

Marisa’s Pick: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

The Winner Last Year Was: Pearl Harbor

Historically, genre films (meaning sci-fi, fantasy, western, etc) get shut out of most categories (for some reason, the Academy just doesn’t like them). The two categories that they consistently do well in, however, are Best Visual Effects and Best Sound Effects Editing, for obvious reasons. It’s shaping up to look that way this year (I’m surprised Minority Report got so few nominations. I never saw it, but there was a big deal about it being “Oscar-caliber” when it first came out). It seems that Best Sound Effects Editing really has nothing to do with the quality of the sound effects, but with the number of them. LOTR, being the longest of the three nominated films, has the most effects by far, but Minority Report shouldn’t be discounted. I’m not sure if there are sound effects in Road to Perdition other than gunshots and car tires squealing, but I never saw it so I could not make an educated guess. That’s why I try to refrain from predicting (that and the fact that I don’t like being wrong). Anyways, this is already too philosophical a discussion for a category like Best Sound Effects Editing, so I’ll stop now.
