Well, we’re down to the final two categories in Tiger’s Summer Movie Guide. Bet you’re disappointed, huh?
“Family Fare” (aka “For Kids of All Ages”)
Movie: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Release Date: June 4
Summary: Trouble is once again a-brewin' as a more mature Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) enters his third year at Hogwarts. Convicted murderer Sirius Black (Gary Oldman) has escaped Azkaban prison and is heading his way. Hermione (Emma Watson), Ron (Rupert Grint), and the rest of the Hogwarts gang are back, along with a few fresh faces, including Emma Thompson as kooky clairvoyant Professor Trelawney, David Thewlis as Professor Lupin, and Michael Gambon, who has the unenviable task of assuming Dumbledore's robes from the late Richard Harris.
My Take: Critics are raving about how Alfonso Cuaron made the series better because he made it “darker.” I don’t quite understand how making something darker automatically makes it better, other than that it follows Cinema Purist Law #6 (“When faced with the choice of making your setting warm and enchanting or dark and creepy, always choose dark and creepy”), but I don’t think it automatically makes it worse, either. Also, I don’t really think Alfonso Cuaron is entirely responsible, as this is when the book series starts to take a darker turn (although it doesn’t get really dark until the fourth book). However, I digress. I liked the first two movies, and I’ll probably like this one, and it’s a given that Laura will want to see it (UPDATE: We’re seeing it on Monday). As a sidenote, it’s kind of weird seeing all the taglines and teasers for this movie when I’ve already read the book (so I already know the ending). That doesn’t happen to me very often.
How Likely I Am To See It: Guaranteed
Movie: Shrek 2
Release Date: May 19
Summary: Newlyweds Shrek (Mike Myers) and Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) hit a snag on their way to "happily ever after." Mid-honeymoon, they detour -- Donkey (Eddie Murphy) in tow -- to visit her folks (John Cleese and Julie Andrews), the rulers of Far, Far Away (think Beverly Hills, complete with stretch carriages and Joan Rivers dishing on fairy-tale fashions). Horrified with his new son-in-law, Fiona's dad conspires with her Fairy Godmother ("Ab Fab'"s fab Jennifer Saunders) to get rid of the grumpy green ogre in favor of the smarmy Prince Charming (Rupert Everett). Enter feline assassin Puss-in-Boots (Antonio Banderas), who wields the ultimate weapon: big sad kitty eyes.
My Take: Believe it or not, I am one of the 12 Americans who did not like the first Shrek movie. I used to say I was the only one, but then I came across a review of Shrek 2 somewhere online, where the reviewer identified himself as “one of the 12 Americans who did not like the first Shrek,” and so I kind of adopted that phrase, since I am one of the other 11. I know one of the other 10 is some guy that Chris talked to once who said it was “stupid.” My mom won’t go so far as to say she didn’t like it, but she does describe it as “weird and a little sacrilegious.” I understood the jokes and thought they were intelligent, but I just didn’t think it was funny. Also, I’m a little hesitant about bashing Disney because Michael Eisner is a Denison alum, and if he has a bad name, then it might be harder for me to get a job (from what I hear, the entertainment industry can be very fraternal like that; for example, one of the senior VPs of Disney and the president of ESPN-also owned by Disney-are both Denison grads). I do, however, find it ironic in a funny way that Shrek, which was supposed to be so counterculture and the animation jewel in the cinema purist crown (as it strongly follows Cinema Purists Laws 7,8, and 9, at least) has become a government lackey, as he now works for the US Postal Service (just go to your local post office and you’ll see what I mean). Anyways, since I didn’t like the first movie, I’m not that enthused about the second, but most people liked the first movie, so don’t let me stop you from seeing Shrek 2.
How Likely I Am To See It: Very Unlikely
Movie: Around the World in 80 Days
Release Date: June 16
Summary: Jules Verne's classic tale of oddball British inventor Phileas Fogg (Steve Coogan), who makes a bet that he can complete the titular adventure. Along for the ride: his sidekick, Passepartout (Jackie Chan) and gorgeous French artist Monique (Cecile de France).
My Take: Just as Marisa was horrified when she heard Brad Pitt was to play Achilles in Troy, she was utterly delighted when she found out that Jackie Chan was playing Passepartout in this movie. It might be interesting to see it with her, but that won’t happen since we’re on separate continents right now. I’ve never read the book or seen the original movie, so I don’t have much insight, but it looks kind of interesting.
How Likely I Am To See It: Somewhat Likely
Movie: Garfield
Release Date: June 11
Summary: Fur flies when sedentary Garfield (voiced by Bill Murray) is forced to get off his considerable keister to rescue airheaded pooch Odie from an evil dog trainer. Human element is provided by Breckin Meyer, as Garfield and Odie's owner Jon Arbuckle, and Jennifer Love Hewitt, who plays a bodacious veterinarian.
My Take: I’ve made various comments about how unpromising the production news/images were. First off, I find it hard to imagine Garfield with any voice other than Lorenzo Music, but he died a few years ago, so (obviously) they had no choice (BTW, I just downloaded the entire first season of Garfield & Friends. Yay!), and I guess Bill Murray kinda sounds like Lorenzo Music. Then I saw the pictures (once again, and it always seems to be with cat-themed movies). Garfield looks kind of creepy (especially the green eyes), but mostly he just looks…wrong. He looks more like a stuffed Morris than Garfield. I’ll take my 2-D cartoon any day. Odie’s even weirder, as I think he just looks like a real dog (I can’t be 100% sure about this, since Odie is barely even in the trailer). Why even bother making him CG if he’s just going to look like a real dog? He doesn’t even look anything like Odie. Still, I love Garfield, so I’m more than willing to give the movie a chance.
How Likely I Am To See It: Definitely
Movie: The Princess Diaries: Royal Engagement
Release Date: August 11
Summary: It's been five years since Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway) accepted her destiny and became Princess of Genovia, and now the recent college grad is ready to rule her people. The problem? An obscure law decrees that she must be married to become queen, sparking a search for a suitable mate.
My Take: A little too much on the “teeny-bopper” side for me.
How Likely I Am To See It: Unlikely
Movie: A Cinderella Story
Release Date: July 16
Summary: Hollywood again courts the too-young-to-drive demographic with an Internet-age retelling of the original makeover story. Hilary Duff is the beleaguered Cinderella (now dubbed Sam), Chad Michael Murray is her Prince Charming, and the always sensational Jennifer Coolidge is the thoroughly modern evil stepmother, brimming with bile and Botox.
My Take: In all honesty, I’d be more likely to see Princess Diaries 2 than this, which isn’t very likely at all.
How Likely I Am To See It: Very Unlikely
Movie: Two Brothers
Release Date: June 25
Summary: Two tigers are separated as cubs and taken into captivity, only to be reunited years later as enemies by an explorer (Pearce) who inadvertently forces them to fight each other.
My Take: There’s a reason I have the Xanga name tigera2001…(Actually, I’ve seen the trailer, but I’d like to check out a little more about the movie before making a final decision)
How Likely I Am To See It: Almost Certain
Movie: Sleepover
Release Date: July 9
Summary: In yet another tween-targeted film that delves into the high-school caste system, "Spy Kids" cutie Alexa Vega hosts a slumber party for her bestest-but-not-quite-A-list pals in the summer before their freshman year of high school. The evening turns adventurous when they enter a scavenger hunt against the cool clique.
My Take: A little out of my age group.
How Likely I Am To See It: Very Unlikely
Movie: Yu-Gi-Oh
Release Date: August 13
Summary: Underneath the sands of Egypt, Anubis, an ancient evil spirit, has awakened. It's up to Yugi, who defeated Anubis centuries ago, to use his skill and determination to rid the world of evil once again.
My Take: I’m not much of an anime buff, but even Liz (who is an anime buff) doesn’t understand it. However, my cousin Nikki, who’s 10, understands it perfectly and spent last Christmas Eve explaining her Yu-Gi-Oh cards to me.
How Likely I Am To See It: Definitely Not
Movie: Benji: Off the Leash
Release Date: August 27
Summary: The iconic canine is resurrected for this G-rated dog's-eye view of the seedy world of puppy mills. This time out, the pooch teams up with a shaggy cohort to rescue his mom from an unscrupulous breeder.
My Take: I kind of grew up on Benji movies, so it’s kind of cute that they’re bringing him back (actually, I heard that the dog in the movie is female).
How Likely I Am To See It: Maybe, if I’m feeling mushy
Movie: Kaena: The Prophecy
Release Date: June 18
Summary: In distribution purgatory since 2002, this CGI fantasy features the voice of Kirsten Dunst as a brave-hearted girl named Kaena, who embarks on a hero's journey to discover why the tree that gives life to her world is running out of sap.
My Take: I haven’t heard anything about this movie save for the MSN bit.
How Likely I Am To See It: Probably Not, but I might give it a chance if I’m curious
