  • I’ll start things off with two observations that I’ve been meaning to make for a while: 1) I don’t like Dr. Phil (my mom loves him, though), but I must say he has succeeded (somewhat) where I failed (those of you familiar with my message board project from last fall will know what I’m talking about; the rest of you probably wouldn’t be interested).  2) Lately, it seems that good things happen to crazy people. I’ll just leave it at that.

All right, the winner for the Earth installment of Hump Day Trivia is Nance1! Granted, she was the only one who played, but she probably would’ve won, anyway, since she only got one question wrong. Here are the answers:

    Easy

    1.      Crust

    2.      Geology

    3.      Earthquake intensity

    4.      Up

    5.      A device that measures air pressure

    Medium

    1.      Crater (Good one with caldera, Nance1!)

    2.      Fjord (or fiord; I’ve seen it spelled both ways)

    3.      Nitrogen

    4.      About 20-21%

    5.      Platinum

    Hard

    1.      Isobars

    2.      Greenland

    3.      Sri Lanka

    4.      Cretaceous

    5.      Nevada del Ruiz

My parents, Laura, and I went to Fort Meigs last Thursday for the fireworks. They charge admission to get into the actual fort now (though the park outside is still free), and we weren’t allowed in there to watch the fireworks (in previous years it was free and one of the best spots to watch the fireworks in), so that was kind of a bummer, but Laura and I got a good spot between the fort and the newly-built visitors’ center. As in previous years, I compiled my own fireworks music. This time I got a little more high-tech and edited MP3s and burned the program onto a CD (I used to record onto a cassette with music from CDs). I have this uncanny knack for syncing up music with the fireworks without even knowing what they’re going to look like, and it was no different this year, except that I had programmed the music to last 20 minutes (which is how long the fireworks usually last at Fort Meigs), and the fireworks lasted 25 minutes. The pyrotechnics guy must’ve had a real sense of humor. Every time you thought the show was done from 20 minutes on, more fireworks would shoot off in a finale-like style. Then there would be a huge pause, followed by more fireworks. This wasn’t as bad as the Completely Disorganized Fireworks Show that happened after the Styx concert in Newark last year, but after 4 or 5 false endings, it got annoying (I love fireworks, though, so I wasn’t too annoyed). It was one of their better fireworks displays, though. Other interesting quotes/observations:

    • “Live…YEA!” (Laura and I joked about this several times. Basically, the MP3 of the Star Spangled Banner I used in my fireworks music had labeled as its album: “Live !” It struck me as funny, so I told Laura about it. We concluded that the space was supposed to be the “dramatic pause,” and the quote evolved from there).

    • Blockhouse 2 (inside the fort) seemed to have an “authentic” breaker box hidden in a storage room.

    • “If you see any clowns, you’ll know what car they came in” (My mom after noticing we were parked next to a PT Cruiser)

    • “Dude, I’m IN the people!” (A woman talking on a cell phone)

    • “It feels like, uh, antifreeze” (Some guy talking to a kid-I’m not sure what he was talking about, beyond something that felt like antifreeze)

    • Several people brought dogs, but there was one guy on a scooter who brought his cat. He had the cat on a leash, but the cat seemed to just want to ride with him on the scooter. He kept putting the cat on the ground and leading it along, but it was not happy about it. Eventually, the cat would make its way back to the scooter and ride along with the guy again. We kept wondering what would happen once the fireworks began…

The girl looks like Gwenyth Paltrow. This result surprised me. I'm not really that emotional, but I suppose I wouldn't object to having an emotional boyfriend. I don't think I know any male Pisces, though.
